Gearbox ranges and parts availability can vary between manufacturers.

The same manufacturer may use different gearboxes across its model range.

The engine can determine which gearbox versions are compatible with the vehicle.

Manual, automatic, automated manual and CVT gearboxes can differ in cost.

The gearbox reference or code helps identify the correct unit for the vehicle.

Availability can affect both cost and how easily the correct gearbox can be sourced.

How much does a gearbox cost?

Repairing the existing gearbox means addressing a specific fault without replacing the whole unit. It may make sense when the damage is limited and the rest of the transmission remains in suitable condition for continued use.

Repair the existing gearbox

Rebuilding or reconditioning involves dismantling the gearbox for a broader inspection and replacing damaged or worn components as required. It can make sense when the existing unit can be restored through more extensive work.

Rebuild or recondition

A used gearbox normally comes from another vehicle or a vehicle dismantler. It can be a reasonable alternative when the gearbox reference is compatible, the unit has been inspected and replacing the complete gearbox is more practical in terms of cost, availability or replacement time.

Used gearbox

A new gearbox is unused, but it normally involves a higher purchase cost. It may be considered when having a new component is a priority and a suitable option is available for the vehicle.

New gearbox

Is it better to repair a gearbox or buy a used one?

Find your gearbox

Symptoms of a faulty gearbox

An automatic gearbox changes gear without operating a clutch pedal. Depending on its design, it may include a torque converter, hydraulic control and electronics. Before replacement, check the transmission code, engine, generation and the vehicle’s electronic connections.

Automatic gearbox

A CVT, or continuously variable transmission, changes the transmission ratio progressively rather than using fixed gears. Depending on its design, it may use pulleys with a belt or chain. When choosing a used CVT, check the code, engine, connections and electronic systems.

CVT gearbox

A DSG gearbox is a term mainly used by the Volkswagen Group for certain dual-clutch transmissions. It uses two clutches, but not every dual-clutch transmission is DSG. Before replacement, check the code, compatible engine and vehicle generation.

DSG gearbox

A manual gearbox lets the driver select gears using a gear lever and clutch pedal. When choosing a used unit, check the engine, transmission code, actuation type and mounting points, as these may vary between vehicle versions.

Manual gearbox

An automated manual transmission is normally based on a manual gearbox and uses actuators to manage the clutch and gears. It differs from a conventional automatic. Before replacement, check the transmission code, actuators, control unit and clutch.
